Following disagreements, the current tenant is leaving the Engel restaurant.
The “Engel” restaurant in Walchwil has not been serving guests since the beginning of December last year. Now tenant Kesang Soghatsang is throwing in the towel – even though the lease runs until 2029. The reason for the premature end at the Engel is a spat between Soghatsang and the owner of the property.
As the “Zuger Zeitung” reported, the lunch table was at the center of the discussions. Soghatsang had started to close the restaurant at lunchtime and had decided to focus exclusively on Asian cuisine in the high-price segment from 2022. He explained his decision by adapting to the changing needs of the clientele. This now increasingly consists of expats.
However, the owner of the property has a different vision for the Engel, according to the article. They want to re-establish the restaurant as a meeting place for the village population – and the lunch table is essential for this. The population also wants more home-style cooking.
In the meantime, the restaurant will remain closed until further notice. The search for a successor is ongoing – the owner does not want to hold on to the contract, which is theoretically still valid. According to Soghatsang, there are already four people interested in running the restaurant. (kh)
