On Sunday (30 August 2026), the Walchwil International Men’s Club focused on the history of its own local area. On a special boat trip from Walchwil to Zug, participants were able to explore Lake Zug and the towns along its shores from a historical perspective.

The Walchwil historian Urspeter Schelbert was enlisted as a private guide for the trip. Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of local history, he explained the development of the various communities, landscapes and notable sites that could be seen during the journey. The focus was on the period from the 14th to the 19th century – an era in which the region’s political, economic and social conditions underwent significant changes.

It was the boat trip on the lake in particular that brought these historical connections to life. The places that are now perceived as part of the familiar landscape appeared in a different light as the commentary unfolded. Lake Zug thus became not merely a backdrop, but a unifying element in the history of the communities surrounding the water.

The boat set off from Walchwil at 10.18 am, next to the Sternen restaurant, and arrived in Zug at 11.55 am. The early departure also meant that the group were able to enjoy the scenery in pleasant temperatures.

The event formed part of the varied programme organised by the Walchwil International Men’s Club, which focuses on helping new residents settle into life in Walchwil. As well as joint activities and getting to know other people, this also includes the opportunity to discover one’s own place of residence and its surroundings from different perspectives. Exploring local history is a particularly interesting way of gaining a better understanding of Walchwil and the region.

Urspeter Schelbert’s talk was very well received by the participants. His presentation garnered extremely positive feedback and made the boat trip both an informative and special outing. Stephen George, Walchwil International Men’s Club
