Chlausjagen – a custom that has its roots in the Middle Ages and attracts numerous Trychler from their homes on 5 December. The Chlaus hunters try their way through the night and make their way up the Walchwilerberg with their bells.

The Chlaus hunt

Two worlds mix in the Chlausjagen. The noisy nocturnal procession of demonic incantations and the Christian custom of the gift-giving, benevolent St Nicholas. On 5 December, the Chlausjäger parade through the village in smaller (at least 3 Chlausjäger) or larger groups. It starts with the children at 4.00 pm and from 7.00 pm onwards, the big hunters join in the action all night long.

The traditional group is dressed in a white shepherd's shirt and a pointed cap. Each group carries an artistically decorated, illuminated Inful (Ifele). Larger groups are accompanied by one or two Geislechle horses. At various times, the wild custom of chasing the Klaus threatened to degenerate to such an extent that the community fathers had to steer the boisterous goings-on into gentler channels.

On Saturday, 9 November 2024, the traditional Heimatabig of the 92-year-old yodelling club Walchwil took place in the well-filled community hall. Sarah Müller hosted the evening, which was all about her homeland, with plenty of wit and humour. With her relaxed, humorous manner, she showed the visitors that they had not taken the time to attend the Heimatabig in vain. Various performances such as alphorn blowers, traditional dancing and yodelling transformed the community hall into a festival hut.

During the interval, raffle tickets were sold. Once again this year, attractive prizes awaited the lucky winners.

Food and drink were provided by the Walchwil respiratory service in collaboration with Fyrabig-Metzg Arth

Organic Natura Beef

Quality meat - from natural feeding. Bio Natura-Beef is meat from 10-month-old calves from suckler cow husbandry. We market our meat regionally. This also means that our butchers Theiler in Allenwinden (sanktmeinradhof.ch) and Uelihof in Ebikon (uelihof.ch) are only a few kilometres away. This also keeps the transport distance for the animals as short as possible. After slaughter, the meat is stored on the bone for 10 days to mature. This makes the meat tender and juicy. Then it is portioned, vacuum-packed and labelled. It is ready packed and can be collected from our farm.

The traditional Walchwil Chilbi took place at the weekend on the Oeltrotten school grounds.

Numerous village clubs took part in the event, which was organized by Kultur Walchwil. Visitors were able to enjoy traditional rides and attractions, including the children's carousel and the Schiffli swing. A highlight was the social gathering of the locals in the various pubs. Horse-loving children were able to ride ponies and have their faces painted. The Chilbi offered a wide range of activities and food, which made for happy faces and shining children's eyes.

Lake Zug invites you to move freely across the wide surface of the water. Under your own steam or with the help of the elements, carried by a board or a boat. At the same time, bodies of water are important habitats for birds, fish and other creatures. In many places, it is possible for people and nature to coexist.

Keep your distance from the reeds
Wherever possible 100 metres. The reeds serve as a breeding and hiding place for many birds.

Keep your distance from gravel islands and sandbanks
If possible, 100 metres or more. These areas are important resting and breeding sites as well as food sources for many birds.

Do not drive along stretches of water where birds congregate
In autumn and winter, disturbance is possible from a distance of 1 km.

Respect protected areas
Always stay outside the marked boundaries, some of which are labelled with yellow buoys or signs and marked on maps.

This summer, many people will once again be out and about on Lake Zug. For some years now, stand-up paddling (SUP) has been particularly popular. However, many stand-up paddlers do not realise that their activity can disturb wildlife.

Lake Zug is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, fish and dragonflies. Birds raise their young in or on the reeds, while juvenile fish and dragonfly larvae are mainly found in shallow water zones.

With the ‘On the water with consideration’ campaign, the ‘Nature and Leisure’ association, together with the canton of Zug and a coalition of sports, leisure and nature conservation organisations as well as companies from the outdoor and tourism industry, is raising awareness of wildlife-friendly water sports. The aim is to show recreationists and sportsmen and women how they can enjoy water sports in an environmentally friendly way.
