A captivating musical treat

The young Camerata Memoria Cordis at the Reformed Church in Walchwil. They were captivated by the view and atmosphere of the Reformed Church in Walchwil.

After two years, the young musicians have returned: an hour of delightful, memorised music-making entirely without sheet music, yet with an intensity, a sense of excitement and a focused ease that allows the audience to become part of the music. No conductor takes centre stage here, nor are there any stars; what we see is an ensemble that comes together through making music. Here, seriousness, daring and a joy in playing are united, whilst a well-honed confidence and an attentiveness to one another are evident and infectious. Instead of a baton, what drives all the performers is a passion for this music, a strong spirit, a smile here, a glance there

The ensemble took up space, moved about and formed shifting quartets, before coming together again as a full ensemble. The tent-like church interior played its part, becoming a resonant acoustic space in its own right. Feeling blessed, delighted and enriched, the audience were happy to linger on the church terrace afterwards, before setting off into the new week with their batteries recharged.

This young Camerata Memoria Cordis truly lives up to its name. Here, music is made with heart and at a high standard. This ensemble radiates mature enthusiasm and, on this evening, inspiring maturity. It undoubtedly adds a very special touch to the musical life of Central Switzerland. The programme, featuring Edvard Grieg and arrangements of Scottish folk songs, was entertaining, though the title ‘folk.lore’ was a charming understatement. This Camerata turns classical music into an energetic experience! Text and photos: Hans Ruedi Kilchsperger
