A treasure for Walchwil

Historical postcard collection digitised

The municipality of Walchwil is delighted to have received a special donation: around 450 postcards dating from 1898 to the present day have been left to it by a local citizen. Thanks to digitisation, these are now accessible to the public.

The collection offers unique images of places and insights into Walchwil's history. The historian Dr Urspeter Schelbert has recorded, described and dated each map. Hans Georg Barthauer has scanned them all. The digitised files, including the index, were handed over to the Zug Library, which published them on the ZentralGut.ch* internet platform, the portal for digitised cultural assets from Central Switzerland. The original maps, packed in archivable folders, will remain in the municipal archives as part of the municipality's cultural heritage.

The municipality would like to thank everyone involved for their work on this project, which preserves a valuable piece of history and makes it accessible for future generations.

Walchwil – ‘Nice on Lake Zug’
International tourism came to Walchwil with the construction of the Pension Hürlimann around 1889 and the building of the railway. On one of the oldest postcards in the collection, a card of the later Kurhaus, then ‘Hotel, Pension Neidhart’, an unknown scribe wrote ‘Ein schöner Gruss von dem schönen Nizza’. The card was cancelled in Walchwil on ‘19. VI.1898’ and sent to Zug.
